Finding the Perfect Place to Live for My Mother-In-Law

When my mother-in-law started getting up in years, and began experiencing more than her fair share of health issues, my husband and the rest of his siblings started a campaign to get their mother to move a whole lot closer to all of us in Georgia. Being the only one of the group with a job that I could work from home, I was tasked with checking out apartments in McDonough, that would be close to the best medical facilities available in Atlanta and close to all of her children in the surrounding suburbs as well.

My mother-in-law is a sweet woman and not the least bit picky, but we wanted her to have the very best place to call her home with all of the amenities and nicest appliances and luxuries to make the transition from the house she had lived in since marriage to my father-in-law, 48 years prior, an easy one. We wanted plenty of outdoor space that she could enjoy as even though she was well-past wanting to mow a lawn or tend a garden, she still enjoyed just sitting outside and enjoying a cup of coffee.

Security was also important as my mother-in-law was already a bit unsure about moving from her small, safe community to a much larger city and we didn’t want her having to worry about a thing.

When my mother-in-law saw the high ceilings in some of the apartments we looked at, I had to remind her that not only were those places far more energy efficient than her old home, but that she wouldn’t need to worry about heating the place for nine months out of the year as she was accustomed to in Michigan. I drove her from the apartments we looked at to the home of each of her children and I think seeing how close we all would be nailed it for her as she signed a lease and started making moving arrangements the very first day we went out looking for place for her to live.
